Carlos Bocanegra plays center back, left back and midfielder, and is the captain of the United States National Team.
On June 24, 2009, Carlos captained the United States National Team that defeated No. 1 ranked Spain to win one of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final games.
When he is not playing for the USA National Team, Carlos plays for French Ligue 1 club Rennes.
Before joining Rennes, Carlos played for Fulham of the English Premier League. Carlos was one of Fulham's leading scorers and served as a captain. On September 15, 2007, Carlos made his 100th appearance in the Premier League, all for Fulham, against Wigan Athletic.
Carlos played college soccer at UCLA. After UCLA, Carlos won the MLS Rookie of the Year Award while playing for a Chicago Fire team that won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. During his time in Major League Soccer, Carlos became one of the top defenders, becoming the first player to win the MLS Defender of the Year Award twice, in 2002 and 2003. Carlos scored five goals and had eight assists during his four seasons in Major League Soccer.
Carlos is of Mexican descent on his father's side. Carlos was born in Upland, California, to Kelly and Manuel Bocanegra and raised in Alta Loma, Rancho Cucamonga, California, where he attended Alta Loma High School.
